Cruella De Vil Aerial Silks
A performance costume designed for aerial silks, inspired by Cruella De Vil. Constructed with four-way stretch fabrics for flexibility, athletic mesh grip panels for silk tricks, and heat transfer logos for durability. Features dalmatian print sourced from NYC's garment district combined with color-blocked panels in the character's signature palette.
The Challenge
Create a performance costume for aerial silks that captures the theatrical impact of Cruella De Vil while meeting the technical demands of aerial acrobatics.
Inspiration
The iconic villainess aesthetic — dalmatian print, bold black-white-red palette, dramatic silhouette. The question was how to translate theatrical costume into functional athletic wear without losing the character.
Design Development
Fabric sourcing began in NYC's garment district, searching for dalmatian print with appropriate stretch and recovery. Panel placement was developed through movement testing to identify high-grip zones for silk work.
Construction
Four-way stretch fabrics throughout for full range of motion. Athletic mesh grip panels strategically placed for silk tricks. Heat transfer logos for durability through repeated washing. Reinforced seams at stress points.
The Result
A costume that performs under the physical demands of aerial work while maintaining the theatrical presence the character requires. Tested and worn in actual aerial silk performances.
